Eight members of the club traveled to New York City on Saturday, May 5, to join up with Buffalo Fenians for their annual match against the NYPD. Cincinnati was granted five starting positions to give the Fenians a boost under the lights in Gaelic Park. The match was competitive throughout, with Drønan having the game of his life in the back and Magee earning an Man of the Match award for his performance as a full forward.
NYPD took the lead in the first half and managed to hold on to it throughout, with a final score of 3-8 to 1-7. A late goal for the PD sealed the deal, leaving the score line not quite reflective of the closeness of the match.
After that it was off to the Heritage Bar in Yonkers, where the home team put on a nice spread and opened a generous tab for the visitors. The next day the lads returned to Gaelic Park for New York versus Leitrim in the opening round of the Connacht Championship. A large crowd cheered as NYC delighted with a very strong performance, leading for most of the match. In the final minute of over time, the estimated 2000 Leitrim fans were relieved when they put it over to win by a single point.
Trips like this prove to be highly beneficial for the club, giving the players experience against strong competitors and more exposure to the US GAA scene. Our thanks to Buffalo Fenians for inviting us for the excellent weekend and especially to NYPD GAA for their hospitality.
